MATCH REPORTS:-

Friday - Twenty20 Match Report

DOWLAND FINISHES UNBEATEN JUST SHORT OF HIS HALF CENTURY AND BELL HITS ANOTHER TRADEMARK SIX TO FINISH ON 32 NOT OUT AS THEY SEAL WIN AGAINST NOTTINGHAMSHIRE TOURISTS. RICHARD MARTIN'S FOUR OVER STINT IMPRESSES.

Friday afternoon at the Mallorca Cricket Ground saw tourists Trent Bridge Cricket Club play Mallorca CC’s second X1 in a twenty/20 match.

The tourists won the toss and elected to bat; opening pair Tim Taylor and Rob Goodwin had posted 26 and Taylor was settling in and striking the ball with confidence when Mallorca’s ‘keeper Steve Bell stumped him for 20 off Richard Martin in the fifth over.

Kumud Wijaratna demonstrated some fine shots finding the boundary on four occasions before David Shoesmith held a catch off first change Malcolm Leggett’s second delivery to dismiss the Sri Lankan for 21 in his thirteen minutes at the crease. Dickinson wasted no time in notching up 19 runs in as many minutes as he and Goodwin shared a valuable third wicket partnership of thirty eight, but ever vigilant ‘keeper Bell was swift to capitalise off Sunni Khan to send Dickinson back to the dressing room with the board showing 89 for 3.

Spinner, ‘Seasoned campaigner’, Jack Scholes turned in a tight performance claiming Neil Van der Walt’s wicket with five added to the score and the Khan - Bell combination dispatched Goodwin for 31 in the penultimate over when Bell held a catch with the score at 114. The tourists finished on 123 for 5 from their twenty overs.

Richard Martin turned his arm over impressively: 4-1-11-1. Jack Scholes: 4-1-18-1. Sunni Khan: 4-0-22-2.
It was good to see Joel Dowland return to the fray, although this was not his first outing with the MCC since working in Dubai it was the first time I’d seen him in action this season. He and Rob Hughes started slowly against Simon Cleaves and Steve Edwards. I have to confess that by the half way stage I’d totally lost the plot having been lulled into thinking that this was in fact the usual forty over game; it certainly didn’t have the impetus of a twenty/20 match.

By the thirteenth over with the clock approaching the hour mark and with only 70 scored it was Goodwin who made the breakthrough, bowling Hughes for 22. Enter Steve Bell; he and Dowland upped the pace getting their heads down and with some spirited running between the sticks the pair passed the target in the nineteenth over, Bell hitting one of his now trademark sixes on the way to an unbeaten 32. Dowland was unfortunate not to reach his deserved half century, carrying his bat for a commendable 45.

Saturday - 35 Over Match Report

Mallorca’s first X1 won the toss and elected to bat scoring a dozen off the first over as Babar Qamar-Shahzad and Paul Heaton got their teeth into the tourists’ attack. With 42 on the board by the fifth over things were looking rosy for the homeside. Heaton had peppered the boundary five times and amassed thirty in his run a minute stint at the crease when Knox held a catch of Cleaves to send him back to the dressing room.

Paul Muckleberg’s innings was but brief; in an uncharacteristic moment of indecision he was tempted to hit what was surely a wide ball and Cleaves had him caught and bowled for 16 with the score at 64. Steve Bell opened his account with a boundary, but he too was dispatched early, Tim Taylor bowling him for 15.

Step up to the plate ‘Big Jon’ Barratt: a sparkling performance ensued as he and Bill Morris entertained in a fifth wicket stand of sixty five until Morris fell to a catch off Goodwin for 16; Mallorca’s score 157 for 5 from twenty five overs.

Neil Cook dispatched the ball to the boundary to open his innings, the tenacious Yorkshireman had notched up 26 in just twenty minutes and Barratt had reached his half century when Dickinson produced a cracking ball to skittle Cook’s stumps with the score at 212.

Roshan Goonesekera and Barratt finished things off in style hitting a substantial 239 for 7. Goonesekera gave up his wicket attempting a second run off the last ball of the innings. He finished on 12 but it was clearly Barratt’s day ending on 73 not out.

After tea the spectators on the terrace were treated to some excellent batting performances from the Nottinghamshire men. Opening duo Tim Taylor and Simon Cleaves despite much carousing in Magaluf appeared on form.

Due to an excellent opening attack from paceman Babar Qamar-Shahzad and spinner Jack Scholes the tourists were well behind Mallorca’s run rate and it was the Pakistani who made the breakthrough bowling Cleaves for 15 with 52 on the board in the eleventh over.

Kumud Wijaratna and Taylor were nothing if not impressive. Taylor notched up his half century with a boundary as he and Wijaratna put on 72 runs before Wijaratna was trapped LBW by Heaton for 36. The tourists: 140 for 3. Trent Bridge’s Neil Van der Walt played a couple of classic shots before being bowled by Leggett for just 11 with the score at 140 from 25 overs. Barratt’s first over proved invaluable as he finally accounted for the tourists’ danger man Taylor bowling him for a glorious 81.

Rob Goodwin fought valiantly in an exciting attempt to reach the target despite losing partners in quick succession. Paterson was run out for just one, then Barratt claimed a couple more victims; Holmes stumped by Bell for 1 and Edwards bowled for nought.

It went to the wire with Trent Bridge’s men failing by just seven runs. Whoever said cricket wasn’t exciting should have been at this game. Goodwin finished unbeaten on 25; the final tally for the tourists 233 for 8.
Qamar-Shahzad returned excellent figures: 7-2-29-1. Barratt: 4-0-23-3.
